Kherson is a southern town situated on both banks of the river Dnipro, being a large sea and river port. Nowadays
it's a modern city with wide but quiet streets, shadowy parks, squares and many places of entertainment and
sightseeing.
The population over 300 thousand people inhabit the territory of about one hundred square kilometers.
We have a glorious history. More than two centuries ago, on June 18, 1778, Catherine II signed the order to build a
fortress and a shipyard on the territory. Later on July 25, the same year the Empress gave the next order. According
to it in the autumn of that very year soldiers commanded by General Hannibal laid the first stone of the city of
Chersoneses.
Kherson is beautiful in any season. It has many historical and architectural places of interest.
Among the monuments devoted to great personalities of the past and present, one can enjoy the monuments to
admiral F. Ushakov and A. Suvorov situated in the streets named in their honor. A unique sun dial in Ushakova Street
is a monument erected in memory of John Howard, a famous English doctor who came to our city to make easier the
life of prisoners in jails.
The city's many museums and theatres are open to the visitors. There is a regional-history museum, the Museum of
Art, a planetarium. Theatre-goers have an opportunity to visit the Ukrainian Drama Theatre and a puppet theatre.
